Teaching Principles
No matter what the background of the student, all are put through a rigorous regimen early in the year to establish not only a solid foundation on their instrument, but more importantly, proper practice habits.  Students will learn to focus and attain success through setting reasonable goals, which lead to bigger goals.  The first few months often involve more simple and basic exercises which help the student cultivate patience while fundamentals are stressed.  Parent involvement and support is of utmost importance all throughout, but especially at this early stage.

Once students have gone through their first phase of training in fundamentals and practice habits, they are now able to learn virtually anything they are taught.  More advanced techniques are then taught, with introduction to music theory, recording arts, and self-promotion and professionalism all part of the the curriculum.  Stevens Conservatory students are trained to be successful, not just 'better at their instrument than the other kid'.

Your student will study under David Baron Stevens, Jr., who is in his second decade of teaching. Always having been a dedicated musician, devoting thousands of hours to the practice of his craft, he has channelled that energy into his teaching, a newfound love.  David often refers to his students as his "kids", whom he loves as if they were his own.  His students have been selected for all-county and all-state honor groups, and have gone on to earn scholarships and degrees at prestigious music schools all over the country.

David Baron Stevens is an experienced and versitile musician, which abilities he shares freely with his students.  Since his junior year of high school, he has been playing with all sorts of professional ensembles, from dance bands to Tejano groups, Broadway musical pit orchestras to jazz quartets, classical duets to punk bands, and even to cruise ship showbands!  His own musical endeavors have taken him far from his native saxophone to flute, clarinet, percussion (drumline 7 years), piano, and voice.  Through the study of all these instruments, he has learned that they all posess teaching points that have improved the quality of his saxophone playing.  For this reason, he has been developing, for over a decade, a teaching method designed to train jazz saxophonists using all these other instruments.  Your student will be following this method while studying at the Stevens Conservatory.

David has studied from some of the world's most prolific artists, such as Kenny Garrett, Jeff Clayton, Rick Heltzer, and Yamaha Recording Artists Tracy Harris, James Walker, and Phil Woods.  Your student will benefit from the training of these world-class musicans.
